The City of Virginia Beach has remained a constant partner and pioneer in the open government community though continuous efforts to maintain an open and collaborative government. As part of the Open Data Initiative, the City has become committed to an Open Source – Open Data platform, designed to allow citizens to access open data from multiple organizations all in one place.
Across the nation, cities are making the shift towards an open government since the official passing of the OPEN Government Data Act on December 22, 2018. The OPEN Government Data Act sets an official presumption that “Government data assets made available by an agency shall be published as machine-readable data … in an open format, and …under open licenses.” The OPEN Government Data Act seeks to define open data without locking in yesterday’s technology, create standards for making federal government data available to the public, require the federal government to use open data to improve decision making, and ensure accountability by requiring regular oversight. All goals of which the City of Virginia Beach has been actively achieving. This is validation that the City is not only heading in the right direction, but leading the way.
As part of Our Open Government, we have created the Open Budget Portal, the Open Spending Portal, and the Open Performance Portal for the citizens of Virginia Beach.
The Open Budget Portal is a gateway that connects individuals directly to the City of Virginia Beach’s Operating Budget and Capital Improvement Program (CIP) at the line item budget level. This level of detail allows readers to review, compare, download, visualize, and analyze the budget in an easy to use format.
The Open Spending Portal is a gateway that grants individuals access to the City of Virginia Beach’s spending. While providing transparency, this level of detail allows readers to review, compare, download, visualize, and analyze the City’s spending in an easy to use format
The Open Performance Portal was created to provide quick and easy ways to access the performance of the community and the City of Virginia Beach. The metrics are organized by the ten City Council goals, and key performance indicators are used to track our progress in meeting those goals.
